Classification of Craniofacial Patterns of Children

Abstract
The sample for this study consisted 368 male who were 6-years-old and 345 female who were 6-years-old. From 713 lateral cephalograms, 44 variables from , the X, Y coordinates of 32 landmarks were calculated. Factor analysis(principal component analysis) was used to summarize these 44 variables in proper factor scores. The craniofacial patterns of males and females were classified on the basis of those factor scores. Analysis -of variance were used to test 18 summarized variables by factor analysis among craniofacial patterns. Total variances were compared with variances of each pattern for 18 summarized variables and disused.
The obtained results were as follows;
1. Factor analysis summarized those 44 variables in 15 factors which explained the 90.6% of total variance in male and female.
2. 9 craniofacial patterns of male and 10 craniofacial patterns of female were obtained by cluster analysis.
3. There were significant differences in 18 summarized variables among craniofacial
patterns of male and 10 craniofacial patterns of female(P<0.05).
4. Coefficient of variances of 18 summarized variables were decreased in 9 craniofacial
patterns of male and 10 craniofacial patterns of female.
